Upload very large files to your gallery

Note: Path names have changed recently with the move to a new server. If you're having problems, please read the instructions to make sure you're using the correct paths. If you're still having trouble, email us.

Once files are larger than 5 megabytes, you may find it difficult to upload them from a web browser. This is because the web browser will not wait long enough for the upload to complete. In order to upload your images, you should use FTP (File Transfer Protocol). There are many FTP programs available, but we currently recommend FileZilla. (You may download this from our server here.)

After installing FileZilla, start the program. When it loads, enter your server name, user name, and password.

Click on "Quickconnect." You should now be connected to the server and see a list of directories on the right site, with one labeled "httpdocs". If you do not see that folder, then you may need to change your Firewall settings by going to Edit->Settings and checking "passive mode."

After you are successfully connected, simply drag your files into the "httpdocs" folder on the server

Once your files are on the server, log back into your gallery and go to "add photos." Scroll down to the bottom of the add photos window and enter the path to your uploaded files, which should look like "/home/httpd/vhosts/domainname/httpdocs/filename". If your domain were "myphotos.com" and you uploaded "vacation.mpg", then the path to your files will be "/home/httpd/vhosts/myphotos.com/httpdocs/vacation.mpg". Enter this into the box near the bottom of the Add Photos dialog, as shown below. Alternatively, if you uploaded multiple files, you can just enter the part of the path without the filename (e.g. "/home/httpd/vhosts/myphotos.com/httpdocs/") and the next page will allow you to choose which photos and movies you would like to add. Click on "Submit URL or directory" and the files should be added.

Adding the file to your gallery will create an additional copy of it on the server, so it is recommended that you delete the copy that you uploaded after successfully adding it to your gallery. To do this, log back into your FTP space exactly as above. In the space on the right to which you dragged the file, right-click on the file that you just uploaded and added, and choose 'Delete' from the menu that comes up. This will delete the extra copy of the file, but your file will still be present in your gallery.
